Germany great Rudi Völler reckons that the current Bayer Leverkusen squad is as strong as Bayern Munich under Pep Guardiola.
Bayer Leverkusen have already sewn up the Bundesliga title for the first time in their history and could win a historic treble, having qualified for the final of the DFB-Pokal and the semifinals of the Europa League.
The Werkself brought in Victor Boniface, Nathan Tella, Granit Xhaka, Jonas Hofmann, Arthur, Matej Kovar and Alejandro Grimaldo last summer.
Signed from Royale Union St. Gilloise for a fee in the region of 20 million euros, Boniface has made a splash in his first season in Germany, registering 28 goal involvements in 30 matches.
The Super Eagles striker would have scored more goals if not for a serious injury he suffered during Nigeria’s pre-Africa Cup of Nations training camp in the United Arab Emirates that kept him sidelined for three months.
Boniface did not join Bayer Leverkusen as an unknown quantity after starring in last season’s Europa League, scoring six goals to emerge as the competition’s top scorer.
Rudi Völler has highlighted that the secret to Bayer Leverkusen’s successful season is the strong squad at the disposal of manager Xabi Alonso.
In quotes relayed by Spox.com, Völler said: “Simon Rolfes, Fernando Carro and Xabi Alonso have put together a great squad and created a tactic that makes them seem invincible.
“Granit Xhaka on the six, defending, Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro on the wings Grimaldo, they have Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick at the front.
“Everything works, including in the other positions. And then Florian is a player who is already one of the top players in world football.
“He is technically outstanding and runs a lot dangerous. The boy has everything.”
The 23-year-old Boniface was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for August, September, October and November.
