Having been a long time coming, Nigerian artist Sheay Akins’ debut EP is proudly marked with a strong sense of victory, triumph and of course, versatility. He makes it clear that despite having released many demos and singles in the past, ‘Versatility (Vol.1)’ signals a new dawn for the musician, fusing his production skills with cheerful and hopeful songs, some of which have been in the making for almost a decade. From track 1, ‘Olojo Ibi (The Celebrant)’, listeners can enjoy a vibrant listen as Akins’ dulcet harmonies overlay upbeat Afrobeat rhythms. In this track we begin to hear the exuberant production choices from Akins, eccentric fx and electric guitar licks add an extra dimension and continue throughout the project.
Akins serves up a truly eclectic mix of Jazz swing beats and saxophone in ‘Stickers on Paper’, Marimba and wholesome lyricism in ‘I’ll Make Things Right’ and even EDM sounds in ‘Searching’- there’s truly something for everyone in this album. The musician even includes a Country remix of his debut single ‘Loop Love Fire’ as a call back to his beginnings as an artist. If you’re looking for zealousness and experimentation in your next music discovery, look no further than this EP from Sheay Akins.
