In a remarkable feat that further reinforces Nigeria’s growing reputation for producing world-class military professionals, a Nigerian Navy officer, Captain (NN) A.O. Akano, has emerged as the best graduating student of the Security and Defence Studies Programme 11/25 at the prestigious South African National Defence College.

According to information obtained by TalkJudith from the official Facebook page of the South African National Defence, Captain Akano graduated on 12 November 2025, earning top honours among senior officers drawn from several nations across Africa and beyond.

The Security and Defence Studies Programme is one of the highest-level strategic leadership courses offered to military officers, designed to equip participants with advanced knowledge in security management, defence policy, and international relations. Excelling in such a diverse and competitive environment speaks volumes about Captain Akano’s intellectual depth, discipline, and dedication to service.

What makes Akano’s achievement even more remarkable is that he becomes only the second non–South African to clinch the overall best student award since the inception of the programme. Interestingly, the first officer to attain this honour was also a Nigerian — Captain (NN) Obute — who achieved the same feat in 2022.

This outstanding performance by Nigerian naval officers at such a high-profile institution continues to highlight the competence, professionalism, and strategic insight that define the Nigerian Armed Forces on the global stage. It also reflects the Nigerian Navy’s sustained investment in training and professional development, ensuring that its officers can compete and excel internationally.

Speaking on the development, a senior military observer described Akano’s success as “a clear testimony to Nigeria’s leadership potential within Africa’s defence and security architecture.” The officer added that such achievements inspire confidence in the nation’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to regional peace, stability, and defence cooperation.

As Captain Akano returns to Nigeria adorned with well-deserved honours, his success story becomes yet another reminder that excellence knows no boundaries — and that Nigerian officers continue to shine wherever professionalism, intellect, and integrity are called upon.
