He dumped the Labour Party for the All Progressives Congress, APC on Wednesday.

Chukwu’s letter of defection was read by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Wednesday.

Commenting on the defection, Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele said Chukwu’s defection is a testament to the fact that the “APC is doing well.”

However, the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP Benue South), reminded Senator Chukwu that he came to the Senate on “sympathy vote.”

Recall that the defected lawmaker was given the LP’s Enugu East ticket, on compassionate grounds, to replace his older brother, Oyibo Chukwu who was the original holder of the ticket.

Oyibo Chukwu was murdered in February 2023, shortly before the year’s general election, in what many believed was a political assassination.

Senator Moro, however, said he would reserve the story of the defection of Senator Chukwu “for another day.”

The defection of the Enugu East senator has now raised the number of APC senators to a controlling majority of 73. The Senate is a 109-member legislative house.
