For a long time, Trent Alexander-Arnold was left out of England squads, with managers unable to utilise his talent, and when he was eventually brought into the setup, he decided against singing the national anthem, much to fans’ disappointment.

However, the significance of being picked amongst the best players in your country remains high, it’s an honour, as Curtis Jones found when he was called up to break through into the senior team, after performing well for the U21s team earlier in his career.

But when you are young, you might find yourself in a position like the one Louis Enahoro-Marcus is in, where you have a choice as to which country you would like to represent, due to your multi-national heritage.

Liverpool defender considers allegiance switch

Enahoro-Marcus is an 18-year-old central defender who plays for the Liverpool U18s set-up at the academy.

His development so far has been promising and last season he received two call-ups to the England international youth team.

However, according to All Nigeria Soccer, he is currently willing to represent the Nigerian national teams instead, in a move to change his professional allegiance.

He was born in 2006 and he grew up in Benin City, Nigeria, before making the move to the UK later in life.

He currently has a British passport, which has enabled him to be picked by England for international competition.

Should he wish to change his allegiance, it would mean that he could participate in future editions of the African Cup of Nations, much like Mohamed Salah who continues to be the club’s standout player.

Fellow Liverpool academy prospect Rio Ngumoha, who moved to Merseyside from Chelsea in the summer, is also of Nigerian descent, although he has so far decided to remain under the allegiance of the England national team because of his British passport.

We will have to wait and see if Enahoro-Marcus goes through with the protocol, but should he, it would be a career-defining move.
