Former Super Eagles player John Mikel Obi has revealed that former assistant coach of Leeds United, Gustavo Poyet, reached out to him regarding the vacant Super Eagles coaching role, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian national football team’s coaching position has been vacant since Finidi George’s departure. In the interim, Nigeria Football Federation’s Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, took charge of the team for the matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

On the Obionepodcast, the former Stoke City midfielder disclosed that Poyet sought his insights on managing the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions.

“He asked me, ‘What’s it like managing the Nigeria national team?’ I gave him my honest opinion,” Mikel said. “Managing Nigeria’s national team is tough. You need to be very patient because things won’t move as quickly as you might hope. Patience is crucial, but progress does happen.”

the former Nigeria international further emphasised that, despite the challenges, the Super Eagles remain a talented squad.

“Most importantly, you’re getting a very good team. Regardless of the hierarchy or politics, focus on the team. You’ll find a young and talented squad that’s ready to succeed.” he added.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting Eguavoen’s departure, he has confirmed that he will continue to lead the Super Eagles for their upcoming games until a permanent coach is appointed by the NFF.
