Baba-Ahmed dismissed speculations of a rift between the two, revealing that while Obi did not invite him to the ADC, their relationship remains cordial.

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, has reiterated his enduring personal and political loyalty to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, despite Obi’s recent move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In an interview with Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed dismissed speculations of a rift between the two, revealing that while Obi did not invite him to the ADC, their relationship remains cordial.

“Peter Obi did not invite me to join him in the ADC,” Baba-Ahmed said when asked if the two were still aligned politically.

“People know me; there are certain things you would rather not approach me with. Our personal relationship remains solid. On the 12th, he attended a wedding at my house, in person,”
he added.

Baba-Ahmed further declared his readiness to support Obi’s presidential bid once again, if he decides to return to the Labour Party.

“I have immense respect for Peter Obi. If he does not get the ADC ticket and decides to return, I will work for him and try to secure the Labour Party ticket for him. I will also try to mend fences between him and anyone he is not on good terms with,”
he stated.

The former senator reiterated that his support for Obi in 2023 was borne out of conviction, not convenience.

“I supported Peter Obi’s presidential ambition with all my heart and mind because, at that time, it was the right thing to do,”
he said.

On the issue of zoning and future candidacy, Baba-Ahmed noted that the North should not be sidelined in the 2027 elections.

“In 2027, a northerner can be elected. The North did not start this; the South did,”
he said, referencing ongoing debates over power rotation and regional equity.
