Melaye made the comments on Monday during an interview on Arise TV.

A former senator, Dino Melaye has made a blunder during a recent interview while defending the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Dino had erroneously said that Nnamdi Azikiwe was never president of Nigeria.

Melaye made the comments on Monday during an interview on Arise TV.

“Nigerians know that no regional champion has ever become president of this country. Awolowo was a very fantastic leader and a fine man but never became president of this country. Azikiwe being a regional champion never became president of this country,” he said.

Melaye, who is the spokesman for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation, was however corrected by his interviewer Rufai Oseni that Azikiwe was in fact the first president of Nigeria.
