Arsenal fans were outraged after the club failed to sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz on deadline day.

As a result of the recent injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, Mikel Arteta was hoping to make a late addition to his midfield squad.

The Gunners made the Villa player Luiz their top priority, but they were up against the clock to complete the deal before the deadline of 11 p.m.

When asked about Luiz’s future on Wednesday night, Villa Park manager Steven Gerrard gave an evasive response. Luiz is in the final year of his contract with the club.

Gerrard said: “I’m not in control of that. There are more than two people in control of [whether Luiz stays] but I’m certainly not one of them.

“That will be Douglas, that will be his agent’s decision as to what happens around that. I’d like to keep him because he’s a fantastic player. I’ve made that abundantly clear.”

The player expressed a desire to join the North London club, but the two clubs were unable to come to an agreement on a fee.

Arsenal made three offers, the first for £20 million, the second for £23 million, and the third for £25 million. All three offers were turned down because they didn’t meet Villa’s £40 million valuation.

The Emirates faithful vented their frustration on social media after learning that Arsenal had missed their target, with most of the anger directed at technical director Edu Gaspar.

On Twitter, EduOut is trending due to the dissatisfied Arsenal supporters over the disappointing conclusion to the team’s otherwise fantastic transfer window.

One fan said: “#EduOut I kept my mouth shut until the end of this window. But he has screwed it up once again. Blame will go all on him when we capitulate!”

Another tweeted: “Jesus and Zinchenko joined because of Arteta. Edu didn’t play much of a part in convincing them. As far as I know he’s done the minimal once again #EduOut”

A third fan added: He keeps messing things up . Douglas Luiz was suppose to be an easy one #EduOut”

Many Arsenal fans expressed their worries that if anymore injuries occur, their good start to the season will be undone.
