The first game of Jose Peseiro’s reign in charge of Nigeria takes place on Saturday night with a trip to the United States to face Mexico.

After suffering World Cup heartbreak at the hands of Ghana in the spring, the Super Eagles look to the future with friendlies against El Tri and Ecuador before two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, against Sierra Leone and Mauritius.

Peseiro laid out his ambitions ahead of the internationals, tweeting: “We will work with great ambition, so that in the end we can finally call Nigeria the ‘four-time African champions’.”

Mexico will be in Qatar this winter and can continue their preparations with Stateside games against Nigeria, Uruguay and Ecuador before the start of their Nations League campaign.

Mexico vs Nigeria is scheduled for a 1.08am BST kick-off in the early hours of Sunday, May 29, 2022.

Mexico vs Nigeria team news

A hefty 38-man squad has been called up by the hosts for this trio of friendlies but there was no space for veterans Javier Hernandez or Miguel Layun.

Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores joins Wolves’ Raul Jimenez as the two Premier League members in the Mexico squad.

A host of uncapped players have made the Nigeria squad with Semi Ajayi, Alex Iwobi, Peter Etebo, Ademola Lookman and Emmanuel Dennis picked by Jose Peseiro.

RB Salzburg youngster Samson Tijani and Feyernoord’s Cyriel Dessers, fresh from a decent performance in the Europa Conference League final, are out to build on their single caps.

Mexico vs Nigeria prediction

Friendlies tend to be tight affairs and these two unfamiliar opponents are unlikely to produce a classic.

Mexico to win 1-0.
