When credit alerts began to light up phones at Canaan House, Awka, on January 13, 2026, relief swept through the hall. For 326 students from Anambra Central Senatorial District, it was more than a bank notification; it was the lifting of a burden that threatened their academic dreams.

At the centre of that moment was Senator Dr. Victor Umeh, OFR, who disbursed ₦64 million to cover tuition fees for beneficiaries of his 2025/2026 Tertiary Education Scholarship Scheme, reaffirming his reputation as one of the most consistent champions of education-driven empowerment in the South-East.

What makes this intervention striking is not just the amount, but the timing. Senator Umeh revealed that official funds for the project were yet to be released. Faced with mounting appeals from students unable to meet tuition deadlines, he chose not to wait.

“The cries of the students moved me,” he said simply, explaining that he sourced alternative funding to ensure no beneficiary dropped out of school due to financial hardship.

The scholarship, now in its second phase since its launch in 2024, supports undergraduate and postgraduate students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Beneficiaries were drawn transparently from all 58 towns in the seven local government areas of Anambra Central, through consultations with community leaders and stakeholders.

The event drew an unusually broad spectrum of society: students and parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, women and youth groups, and community president generals, each group bearing witness to the ripple effect of educational access. For many parents, the intervention removed a silent shame.

“This scholarship has taken away the pain of not being able to sponsor our children,” one parent said, echoing a sentiment shared by many in the hall.Students, some visibly emotional, spoke of near-withdrawals, deferred dreams, and renewed hope. For them, the scholarship was not charity, it was an opportunity restored.

Also, Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, attended as special guest, lending weight to the moment. Known nationally for his advocacy for education, Obi described the scheme as “overwhelming and unprecedented.

”“This is a strategic investment in human capital,” Obi said. “Its benefits will not end with these students; it will extend to their families, their communities, and society at large.”Faith, Fairness and Inclusion religious leaders across denominations testified to the scheme’s inclusiveness.

Rev. Fr. Paschal Udo of the Catholic Diocese of Awka praised Senator Umeh’s long-standing commitment to education, noting that students from St. Patrick’s College, Awka, and Peter University benefit from his support.

On the Anglican side, Mr. Dike Chigozie Alexander, himself a beneficiary, revealed that ten slots were specifically allocated to the Anglican Students Fellowship, reinforcing the programme’s non-discriminatory structure.

A Legacy Nearly Three Decades Old according to Sir Maurice Aneto, Secretary of the Victor Umeh Education Foundation (VUMEF), the senator’s scholarship journey began as far back as 1999 and later evolved into a formal foundation.

Over the years, VUMEF has produced hundreds of graduates, many with distinctions, in Medicine, Engineering, Law and other disciplines, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The foundation also supports students in secondary schools, ensuring early educational stability.Instant ImpactIn a symbolic and practical finale, Fidelity Bank officials effected instant payment of the scholarship funds, prompting cheers as beneficiaries received real-time credit alerts on their phones, an uncommon but powerful demonstration of accountability and impact.

Beyond Politics traditional rulers, women leaders and youth organisations took turns eulogising Senator Umeh, one theme stood out: this was governance beyond legislation, representation that touches lives directly. In a country where access to education is increasingly threatened by economic pressures, Senator Victor Umeh’s ₦64 million intervention stands as a reminder that strategic, people-centred leadership can still change stories, one student, one family, and one future at a time
