Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored the opener for Galatasaray in their 3-0 thrashing of Kayserispor that sealed their status as Turkish Super Lig champions.
After helping Galatasaray claim the Turkish Cup last week, Victor Osimhen led the line for them again as the Lions welcomed Kayserispor to Rams Park in a game that could seal their status as Super Lig champions.
Galatasaray stamped their authority on the game very early. Osimhen got his first big chance in the 12th minute after receiving a pass around the edge of the box.
He struck the ball with venom, but Bilal Bayazit pulled off a big save to prevent the kings of Turkey from going in front.
13 minutes later, Osimhen put the ball in the net, but the referee ruled it out for offside.
However, the Nigerian was not to be denied on the night, as he scored the opener in the 26th minute. Osimhen jumped highest to meet a cross from Gabriel Sara and headed it home to make it 1-0 and put Galatasaray firmly in the driver’s seat.
Then, just three minutes later, Baris Alper Yilmaz, who has had an impressive season, scored the second for the Lions.
Despite scoring twice, Galatasaray continued to pile on the pressure. But they had to wait until the dying embers of the game to get their third.
Galatasaray were awarded a penalty after a VAR review revealed that Alvaro Morata was fouled in the box. Osimhen is the designated penalty taker for Galatasaray, but he allowed goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who is expected to end his 14-year stay at the club by the end of the season.
The 38-year-old Uruguayan struck the ball towards the middle of goal. Bayazit got his feet to it, but the force of the shot was too strong, and the ball eventually found its way into the net to ensure the game ended 3-0.
The win takes Galatasaray to 89 points, eight points above second-place Fenerbahce. With two games left, it is mathematically impossible for Jose Mourinho’s team to catch up. Hence, Galatasaray have won their 25th Super Lig title.
