A Nigerian governor has ignited a social media frenzy after proposing a staggering budget of ₦700 million for the purchase of just 50 torchlights and 100 walkie-talkies. This eye-catching allocation has drawn widespread attention and criticism across various platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).

Oseni Rufai, a correspondent for Arise News, broke the story in a recent post detailing the controversial budget. He revealed that the governor plans not only to spend millions on these basic items for the Bayelsa Community Safety Corps but also to invest ₦4.6 billion in purchasing 20 Hilux trucks and SUVs, along with an additional ₦1.2 billion earmarked for government printing machines.

In his post, Rufai wrote, “₦700 million to buy 50 torchlights and 100 walkie-talkies for Bayelsa Community Safety Corps. ₦4.6 billion to buy 20 Hilux and SUVs and another ₦1.2 billion for government printing machines. All in the budget.”

As the post gained traction, concerned citizens flocked to the comments section, expressing their disbelief and sharing their opinions on what many see as a misallocation of public funds. The situation raises significant questions about fiscal responsibility and the priorities of state leadership in Nigeria.
