FOUNDATION MATTERS

by Rev. John K. Mathew

Watch a skyscraper under construction. For the first six months or so of the project, all that the workmen do is make a great hole in the ground. By starting far below the surface level seems absurd, even crazy. But, as you would suspect, there is a good reason for the large hole. To build a huge and massive building, it is first necessary to dig down until a strong foundation can be built, one that is capable of supporting the skyscraper.

A doghouse needs no foundation, and an ordinary house can be built on little more than a concrete slab. But a skyscraper requires a deep and solid foundation.

The Bible often speaks and portrays the Church as a building. Jesus said, "I will build my church." The cornerstone of this foundation is Lord Jesus Christ himself. Peter says, "a stone is laid in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame and now to you who believe, this stone is precious." Paul the apostle of Jesus Christ set an example which is a blueprint for all future works. He says, "by the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder and someone else is building on it." But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Having Jesus Christ to be the capstone is not only important for His church but all other areas of a Christian life. Everything that we do must be rooted in Christ. Towards the end of His beatitudes, Jesus in an excellent parable describes two kinds of builders. One, laid his foundation on sand and built a house, the rain came down, the streams rose, the winds blew severely against that house bringing down with a great crash. The other builder laid his foundation on rock. The same thing happened. The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew severely beating against the house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.

Jesus calls this second man (who built on the rock) a wise builder, and his counterpart a foolish builder. The first one is foolish and the other wise because the wise builder heard the word of his master builder and put them into practice. The difference is in obedience!

In Gospel of Mathew we read about two gates and two types of trees. He calls one gate ‘wide’ and one road ‘broad’ that leads to destruction. Many enter through it. he calls the other gate ‘small’ and the road ‘narrow’ that leads to life. Only a few find it. It also talks about a "good" tree and a "bad" tree. What makes the difference? Obedience!

Who is this rock that we can lay a strong foundation on? Is is Peter, Paul or any other apostle? No. Paul says That Rock was Christ.Paul expounds " they ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock, that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ".
